About Ian’s Ride
Ian’s Ride is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting outdoor accessibility, advancing inclusive technology, and advocating for safe, connected infrastructure for people with mobility impairments. It was founded in 2016 by Ian Mackay, a naturalist and cyclist turned C2 quadriplegic after a bicycle crash in 2008.

After regaining independence through adaptive tech and rediscovering his love of the outdoors, Ian embarked on a 335-mile journey across Washington state in his power wheelchair. That ride ignited a movement—leading to accessible group rides throughout Western Washington (including the signature Sea to Sound event), nationwide advocacy for active transportation, and ongoing consultations with companies like Apple to enhance hands-free technology.

In 2022, Ian set a Guinness World Record by traveling over 184 miles in 24 hours using a power wheelchair, shining a spotlight on mobility devices and the need for inclusive infrastructure. His story is now captured in Ian’s Ride: A Long-Distance Journey to Joy, authored by Karen Polinsky and published by Mountaineers Books in 2025. The book chronicles Ian’s transformation, from his injury to his leadership of a growing movement for accessibility.

At its heart, Ian’s Ride is about transforming barriers into opportunities and ensuring everyone can move freely through the world—no matter how they roll.
